I like the way you end; “But some critics have pronounced his inclusion in the squad to be a mistake and a publicitity stunt”, that strikes me as a believable conclusion. Although traditionalists disapprove of beginning a sentence with ‘But’, I think breaking language rules is good as long as you can defend yourself.
